Workshop on “Fundamental Techniques in Molecular Biology” “at Ziauddin University, Clifton Karachi from 5th to 7th July, 2022

The Department of Molecular Medicine conducted a hands-on workshop on the Fundamental Techniques in Molecular Biology from 5th to 7th July, 2022. The aim of the workshop was to train the participants with basic molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extraction, quantification, gel electrophoresis, cDNA synthesis, primer designing and real-time PCR.

The Program Coordinator, Dr. Yamna Khurshid welcomed the participants and a keynote lecture highlighting the significance of the workshop was delivered by Executive Director Research, Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza. Dr. Yamna Khurshid followed forward to give the participants a basic understanding of laboratory biosafety. The participants were then provided hands-on experience in DNA extraction and quantification by Dr. Ambrina Khatoon and Mr. Moazzam Shahid followed by Dr. Rehan Imad’s lecture and practical session on gel electrophoresis.

On day second, Dr. Shumaila Usman delivered a lecture and lab session on RNA isolation and cDNA synthesis. The last day was dedicated to real-time PCR and conducted by Dr. Yamna Khurshid. The participants shared that they gained new insight and valuable knowledge which will help them in the future. The certificates were distributed among the participants.

Workshops 2021

Workshop on “Fundamentals of Cell Culture” “at Ziauddin University, Clifton Karachi

from November 8-9, 2021

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Research conducted a hands-on workshop on the Fundamentals and Applications of Cell Culture on 9th and 10th November, 2021. The aim of the workshop was to equip the participants with basic cell culture techniques including harvesting, subculturing, seeding, cryopreservation and cytotoxicity assays. The participants represented over 5 reputed organizations including Dow University of Health Sciences, SZABIST, University of Karachi and Defense Science and Technology Organization (DESTO).

The program commenced with the recitation from Holy Quran. Dr. Yamna Khurshid welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of cell culture in the research and pharmaceutical industry. The keynote lecture emphasizing the clinical applications of cell culture was delivered by Executive Director Research, Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza. The Program Coordinator, Dr. Rehan Imad followed forward to give the participants a basic understanding of the terminologies and techniques used in cell culture. The participants were then provided hands-on experience in sub-culturing, plating and reagent preparations by Dr. Rehan Imad, Dr. Abdul Hameed and Dr. Yamna Khurshid. A thought provoking and extremely worthy lecture on the fundamentals and utilization of cell culture in designing research projects was conducted by Dr. Shamim Mushtaq.

 

Workshop on Bioinformatics & Computational Biology for the Beginners, at Ziauddin University, Clifton Karachi from December 7-8, 2021.

Department of Research and Department of Molecular medicine has organized a two-day hands-on workshop entitled “Bioinformatics & Computational Biology for Beginners” in collaboration with Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine & Drug Research (PCMD, ICCBS) from 7 to 8 December, 2021. During this two-day hands-on session several essential bioinformatics topics have been covered like biological databases, bioinformatics tools, sequence comparison, biological pattern search, 3D structure visualization and modeling, in addition to other important topics. The goal of this workshop was to increase practical knowledge of Bioinformatics that was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Zaheer-ul-Haq Qasmi (Ph.D. Computational Biology) and Dr. Ambrina Khatoon, (Ph.D. Biotechnology).
