BS in Molecular Medicine (4-years program)

In a world where healthcare needs are constantly and rapidly rising as scientific innovation, technological development and advancement hold the lion’s share of society’s collective wealth. Ziauddin University has taken a breakthrough and imperative initiative in Pakistan to stand out with the launching of BS Molecular Medicine Program.

Molecular Medicine is often referred to as “tomorrow’s medicine”. It is a newly emerging and most sought-after field in medicine globally with a focus on cutting edge advances in disease diagnosis, therapy and prevention driven by advanced bio-molecular research. It is established as a forward-looking academic program designed to train students at the interface of basic and clinical sciences. Its inception marked the first such program from a medical institution in Pakistan, rooted with the firm belief that rigorous training of the young scholars in the genetic and biochemical basis of human disease would provide an effective means to translate rapid advances in basic research into practical health benefits.

The program provides a unique opportunity for the young inquisitive minds to ponder over the different aspects of medical sciences they learned in theory by performing hands on practical training. One of the unique strengths of this course is its interdisciplinary approach whereby different areas of medical sciences are harnessed towards understanding of disease processes at ultimate molecular level with the development of diagnostics and therapeutic approaches.

The program will provide well-founded essential knowledge of the basic sciences including pre-clinical knowledge of Molecular Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Physiology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, Biotechnology, Proteomics, Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cells Therapy, Molecular Pharmacology, and Bioinformatics.

Program Objectives

  • To produce scholars with in-depth knowledge of molecular genetic mechanisms of diseases with their diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
  • To acquire various molecular and cell biology skills fundamental to the analysis and manipulation of these molecules in order to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

Scope of the Program

The trending academic discipline holds huge scope in both research and clinical work for patient care with in-depth understanding of molecular processes pertaining to etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of diseases with the potential to transform the medical sciences in relation to recent molecular diagnostics and technology offering a plethora of career opportunities. With the advancements in Genomics, personalized medicine is becoming a reality and studying Molecular Medicine enables one to apply this to individual subjects. Pharma industries are interested in application of Molecular Medicine to design tailored drugs. Currently it seems that they would be competing with the bachelors in Biotechnology, Biosciences, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Medical Technology on the following job positions:

  1. Lectureships in Teaching Institutions
  2. Research Associate/ Research Assistant
  3. Lab Managers and administrators
  4. Scientific Journalism/Writers
  5. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology Industries
  6. Research and Development
